2022 could be a great year for games if strategy is your favorite genre. Not only do many, but also very promising titles appear.
All in all, 2021 was quiet – let’s say decent strategy year. It was certainly not a masterly year that was filled to the brim with top-class players. But there were at least a few highlights. For example, Civilization got competition from the successful global strategy games Old World and Humankind. In addition, of course, the long-awaited real-time strategy game Age of Empires 4 appeared, for which the waiting time was really worth it. And Shadow Tactics also celebrated its return thanks to the famous DLC Aiko’s Choice.
The year could have been even more glorious if highlights like Total War: Warhammer 3 hadn’t been postponed. But in compensation 2022 could shine even brighter. Because Warhammer 3 is just one of many strategy games that will be launched in the next twelve months.
In our top list, you will get to know the most exciting representatives of the strategy genre that await us in 2022. This includes building games, real-time strategy, round strategy, and everything in between.
King Arthur: Knight’s Tale
Genre: Round tactics | Developer: Neocore Games | Platforms: PC | Release: February 15, 2022
What’s the matter? Everyone knows the Knights of the Round Table. A series of daring warriors who are loyal to the legendary King Arthur. Real beam men! But not so in King Arthur: Knight’s Tale. Here Arthur and his warriors are part of a cruel and very dark version of the Middle Ages. Full of terrible monsters and even more terrible people. It no longer matters that our main character is not Arthur, but his subtle adversary Mordred.
Suitable for The King Arthur series used to compete with Total War – but those days are over. Knight’s Tale is a classic round tactic and is now competing with XCOM. We hire heroes as Mordred, train them and if someone bites the dust, he will be lost forever.
When is it coming? In theory, King Arthur is already playable now. The tactical game went into Early Access in 2021. The full release is currently planned for February 15, 2022. By the way, we tested the EA version and gave it an initial rating trend.
Total War: Warhammer 3
Genre: Strategy | Developer: Creative Assembly | Platforms: PC | Release: February 17, 2022
What’s the matter? On Total War: Warhammer 3 feverish fans have toward a while. Who can blame them, after all, they only had to wait about a year for the second part. Warhammer 3 took a lot more time. The third part will at least be the grand finale. Here it goes into the decisive battle because finally, the chaos shows itself to its full extent. While only generic chaos hordes were on the way in the predecessors, the armies of the four chaos gods now appear individually. So prepare for renewed mass battles, full of brave soldiers, demons, magic, and huge monsters.
Suitable for The concept of Total War has proven itself over decades. Round strategy and real-time strategy are combined here. So you can both expand your fantasy kingdom round by round on a campaign map and also fight every battle personally in real-time. No other strategy game manages to depict such epochal mass battles. Especially in the Warhammer offshoots, because here not only do historical strategies come into play, but monsters, magic, and flying units require very special approaches.
When is it coming? Warhammer 3 was announced in 2021 and caused a big surprise when it was due out that same year. Ultimately, however, it was postponed and is now planned for the beginning of 2022. The time has come on February 17th. Warhammer 3 appears in addition to Steam in the Epic Store and even in Game Pass.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Genre: Round tactics | Developer: Firaxis Games | Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X | Release: 3rd quarter 2022
What’s the matter? There are quite a few superhero teams in the Marvel Universe, the X-Men and the Avengers are just the most popular top of the skyscraper. Marvel’s Midnight Suns focuses on a rather unknown group or was inspired by the Midnight Sons, whereby it is a gathering of more mythological heroes like Dr. Strange or Ghost Rider. Midnight Suns adds numerous other superheroes to the line-up and doesn’t leave out any favorites. Captain America, Iron Man, and Wolverine are there for example.
Suitable for Midnight Suns comes from Firaxis, who with games like Civilization and XCOM have made a name for themselves as arguably the greatest turn strategy experts. Her new project is more reminiscent of XCOM, because here, too, we help an elite squad to win against outnumbered enemies in turn-based tactical battles. But in this case, we command heroes instead of soldiers and we can even make our own superhero.
When is it coming? So far there is no specific date for Midnight’s Suns. The third quarter of 2022 is planned, i.e. late summer or autumn.
